WHAT'S NEW

A New Product

Soy Butter which can be used to replace peanut butter. If your looking for a nut butter which contains zero cholesterol, lower fat and higher protein, soy nut buffer is your choice. It's fat content, [approximately 11 grams per two tablespoons), is 30% lower than peanut butter. Health Trip Foods, Concord, Massachusetts is a company that currently produces soy butter and is the only manufacturer devoted to doing so. Health Trip Foods uses only organically grown soy, primarily from Iowa. A big thank you to Dr. Tori Hudson, ND, 'Women's Health Update', Townsend Letter for Doctors & Patients, 4/99, pg. 121

These health benefits are self explanatory, plus, soy protein is high in iosflavones which are being studied for lowering of HDL cholesterol, retardation of breast tumors and osteoporosis.

Too much Vitamin A and Osteoporosis

Doubling the recommended intake for vitamin A may dramatically increase a woman's risk for osteoporosis. Researchers from Sweden studied 422 women between the ages of 28 and 76. They found that for every one milligram increase in dietary retinol (or 3,333 I.U. of preformed vitamin A), the risk of hip fracture rose 68%.
Comment: The recommended dietary allowance of vitamin A for women over the age of 11 years is 4.000 I.U. per day. Accounting for dietary sources and supplemental vitamin A found in multiple vitamin/mineral products, many women are taking 8 to 10,000 I.U. per day while not taking as much as the toxic dose (20,000 I.U. to 50,000 I.U. per day; 10,000 I.U. per day in pregnant women). Unknowingly, many women and their practitioners are taking amounts of vitamin A that put them at increased risk for osteoporosis and fractures. Melhaus H, et al. Excessive dietary intake of vitamin A is associated with reduced bone mineral density and increased risk of hip fracture. I find this interesting and wonder which type of vitamin A was used in the study? Did they include the full 11-cis retinoic acid form of vitamin A? I will research this and report the findings, at a later date.
